A Child Changing His or Her School Habits
If a child is not, this most likely means that the child currently is coping pretty well with the divorce and/or separation. If he or she is spending more time, however, it may mean the breakup is taking a toll. A marital breakup can upset the home atmosphere enough that a child may look to friends for support or extra activities to take his or her mind away from the troubles. This is not a cause for undue alarm.
A significant personality change most likely means that a child is hanging out with a different group of friends. This new group may not be the best influence on him or her. Care must be taken not to push the child even further away. One option is to contact the child's teachers and see if they have noticed any changes in behavior, but a parent must take care not to jeopardize his or her child's trust. Instead of pointing fingers at new friends or being suspicious about why he or she is not home after school, constructive suggestions about after-school activities are a better approach. It is tough to hang out at the local video arcade when a child has sports practice or piano lessons.
